Retail and Entertainment: Exploring the Shopping Malls of Hamburg

Hamburg is Germany’s second-largest city and is best known for the Port of Hamburg. It is one of Europe’s most important cultural centers, with tourist attractions such as the Hamburger Kunsthalle and Tierpark Hagenbeck.

Νevertheless, Hamburg is also a shopper’s paradise, making shopping here a necessary experience when visiting Germany. From cheap markets to high-end stores, here are some places to shop ‘till you drop and be entertained at the same time.

Alstertal-Einkaufszentrum

A true shopper’s paradise, the Alstertal houses with at least 240 shops that offer everything from clothes and accessories to electronics. The center is covered by a glass dome that lets the daylight in during winter, while also keeping customers warm inside.

Inside Alstertal-Einkaufszentrum, you can find chains like Zara, H&M, Lacoste, and Apple. But the place also offers restaurants, cafes, and snack bars like Starbucks and Gosch Sylt.

Entertainment

There are also gyms and spas. Meridian Spa & Fitness, in particular, has a 1,000sqm roof terrace so you can enjoy the several saunas and whirlpools they have under the glass dome.

Europa Passage

Europa Passage is Hamburg’s main shopping mall. With more than 120 shops across five shopping levels, its architecture gives it the appearance of a luxurious cruise ship. Whether you’re looking for fashion, groceries, or art supplies, Europa Passage has everything.

Entertainment

Aside from simply shopping, many stores hold some performances or concerts, or even offer courses such as basic jewelry design and painting. There are many restaurants and cafes to choose from – whether it is Boussi Falafel’s Lebanese dishes or Thai cuisine at Cha Cha. It is not difficult to lose track of time with the many things you can do in Europa Passage

Hamburger Meile

Hamburger Meile is one of the longest shopping centers in Europe. It has more than 150 shops. The restaurants are great too – Nordsee serves fish, burgers, and Fischbrötchen (which are literally fish sandwiches), while Souply offers Vietnamese cuisine.

For even more adventure, the mall is connected to the Mundsburg Center via the first floor. Here, you’ll find many entertainment and recreation options, such as a cinema, sports center, and the Casino Mundsburg, which is one of the casinos under Spielbank Hamburg.

They’re open from 11 am until midnight, offering 79 slot machines, and is one of the best places in the city to play poker in a casino. They also have an average of four cash games for No-limit Texas Hold’em and Omaha Pot Limit every night. Poker tournaments are held every Friday, Saturday, and the first Thursday of the month. If you are considering visiting, you may want to read up on developing a slot machine strategy or getting to grips with the rules of poker.

Hanseviertel

Hanseviertel is a classic shopping arcade and a product of its times. Bronze inlays are embedded in the floor together with the Hanseatic cities’ coats of arms. Starting in the 1980s, its architectural integrity has been called into question, with Hanseviertel almost falling victim to the wrecking ball. Fortunately, the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection declared this shopping arcade as protected building in 2018.

Entertainment

Hanseviertel is the place to go if you’re looking for extraordinary fashion, such as Barbour, Red Wing Shoes, and Stone Island. There are great food places as well. Cafe Rouge is an excellent bistro that you can enjoy either under the small dome of the Hanseviertel or indoors.

Colonnaden

While it’s actually a street, the area is often compared to a mall, Colonnaden has specialty boutiques that you should definitely check out. Built in 1874, Colonnaden features beautiful Wilhelmian architecture with exquisite marble shop fronts. You can find luxury products and high-quality specialty items, such as handcrafted jewelry at Nana Hellwege, paper and pens at Papier & Feder, and custom shoes at Crossford’s. There are many fine restaurants and cafes as well. Pastelaria Caravela serves Portuguese cuisine while Le Pergola Due offers Italian.

Entertainment

If you’re still not ready to finish your trip, Colonnaden is connected to Stephansplatz, which has great food options too. Campus Suite – Stephansplatz is a European cafe that offers pasta, burgers, and latte. Another place to try is Tarantella, a great restaurant that serves Mediterranean cuisine.

This restaurant is found in the Casino Esplanade, another casino under Spielbank Hamburg that’s usually associated with the Casino Mundsburg. The casino is open from 3 pm to 4 am and offers 130 slot machines, tables for roulette, blackjack, and poker. They have cash games for No-limit Texas Hold’em and Omaha Pot Limit every weekend and some Thursdays.
